Modern Love (and Heartbreak) Songs Better Than The Cliche Old Songs

If you're like me, you absolutely hate cliches. Love and romance is also way different than when a lot of standard love and break-up songs were written. Below are four of my favorite love songs all from within the past three years.

Heat Waves- Glass Animals

Glass Animals are having undoubtedly the biggest year of their career so far. 2020 saw the release of the psychedelic pop band's third album, Dreamland, which I will go out on a limb and say is their best album yet. The single was released in June 2020 and almost a year later, has become a top 40 hit (well deserved in my opinion). Lead singer Dave Bayley has said that the song is about the inability to salvage a relationship and those goosebumps hit full force when that last chorus drops.

Beautiful Stranger- Marcus King

Marcus King (front-man of the Marcus King Band) released his solo album, El Dorado, in 2020. King's voice could rival any blues veteran and he's only 25. Pair that with legendary producer and Black Keys' lead singer Dan Auerbach and you're sure to have one hell of a record. Lyrically the song is the classic falling in love at first sight deal we've all heard before, but when that choir backs up King's insanely powerful and soulful vocals at the end of the song, it's game over. This was also featured in my Morning Coffee playlist from my previous post.

Superstition- Young the Giant

Were you an indie kid in the late 2000's early 2010's? If the answer is yes, then odds are, you really loved Young the Giant circa 2010-2011 (or still do, because I sure as hell do). Young the Giant is a criminally underrated band and their latest album, 2018's Mirror Master, did not disappoint. Track one is this beautiful gem. The lyrics are about falling in love while not believing in fate, or destiny and as someone who also has this stance, it really resonates with me. The song is probably one of the most beautiful love songs written in the past five years and Sameer Gadhia's vocals are just "chef's kiss."

If It Feels Good (Then It Must Be)- Leon Bridges

Alright, I should probably throw an upbeat song in here for good measure. Leon Bridges has got a damn good thing for years now and is a great face of modern R&B and soul. His 2018 sophomore album, Good Thing, includes this song that is sure to make anyone excited about the prospect of falling in love, and pushes you to lean into those feelings. Smooth vocals and something we can dance to? I'm in.
